How to Get Target’s 20% College Student Discount Before It Ends Sept. 12

College students still have time to claim one of Target’s biggest back-to-school discounts of the year.

Verified college students who are members of the free Target Circle program can get 20% off one purchase through Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026. Target says the promotion is available to students currently enrolled at a degree-granting college or university.

The discount is not automatically available to every Target shopper. You first need to join Target Circle and verify your student status through Target’s website or mobile app.

Quick Take

  • Discount: 20% off one purchase
  • Deadline: Sept. 12, 2026
  • Who qualifies: Eligible college students
  • Membership required: Target Circle
  • Cost to join Target Circle: Free
  • Verification: Required
  • Where to verify: Target app or Target.com
  • Discount appearance: Allow up to one hour after successful verification

Who Qualifies for Target’s College Student Discount?

Target says the student discount is available to Target Circle members who are currently enrolled in a degree-granting college or university.

You do not need a Target Circle credit or debit card to qualify for the student promotion.

You do, however, need a Target Circle membership.

Target Circle itself is free to join and provides access to deals and personalized bonuses. It is different from Target Circle 360, which is Target’s optional paid membership with additional delivery benefits.

If you already have a regular Target account, check whether you are enrolled in Target Circle before creating anything new.

How to Verify Your Student Status in the Target App

Target allows students to complete verification directly through its mobile app.

To start:

  1. Open the Target app and sign in.
  2. Go to My Target.
  3. Select the Settings wheel.
  4. Find Discount verification.
  5. Select Student.
  6. Enter the requested information.
  7. Submit the verification form.

Target uses SheerID to verify student eligibility.

Make sure the name and other information you enter match your official school records. Small differences, including using a nickname instead of your official first name, can cause verification problems.

How to Verify on Target.com

You can also complete the process from a computer or mobile browser.

Target’s instructions are:

  1. Sign in to your Target account.
  2. Open Manage account.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Find the Discount verification section.
  5. Select Verify status.
  6. Choose the student verification option.
  7. Enter your information and submit the form.

If Target can verify your information electronically, you may not need to upload additional documents.

If more proof is required, Target may ask you to provide documentation showing that you are currently enrolled.

What Documents Can You Use?

If Target cannot immediately verify your student status, you may be asked for a school-issued document.

According to Target, the document should show:

  • Your school name
  • Your first and last name as they appear on school records
  • A date showing current enrollment

Examples of accepted documentation include:

  • A school ID card with an expiration date
  • A current class schedule
  • A tuition receipt

Target notes that verification can fail when the information submitted does not match school records. Typographical errors can also cause problems.

Because the 20% promotion ends Sept. 12, it is better to complete verification before the final day rather than waiting until you are ready to check out.

How Long Does It Take for the Discount to Appear?

Successful verification does not always mean the Target Circle offer appears instantly.

Target says students should allow up to one hour after successful verification for an active Target Circle Bonus to appear in their account.

If the discount does not appear, first confirm that your verification was actually completed successfully.

You can find your Target Circle benefits in the Target app by opening My Target and selecting Target Circle. On Target.com, sign in and open the Target Circle section of your account.

If your verification is successful but the promotion still does not appear after the expected period, Target recommends contacting its Help Center.

When Does the 20% Target Student Discount End?

The current college student promotion ends Sept. 12, 2026.

Target originally announced the offer as part of its 2026 back-to-school and back-to-college campaign. The promotion began July 5 and provides verified college students with 20% off one storewide purchase during the promotional period.

Target’s current College Student Appreciation page continues to display the 20% offer with the Sept. 12 expiration date.

That makes the next several days particularly useful for students who still need dorm supplies, clothing, school essentials, groceries or other items after the semester has already started.

As with other Target promotions, restrictions and terms apply, so check the offer displayed in your account before building a large purchase around the discount.

Teachers Can Get the 20% Discount Too

The promotion is not limited to college students.

Target is also offering verified teachers 20% off one purchase through Sept. 12.

Target’s teacher eligibility is broader than many shoppers may realize. Eligible groups include:

  • K-12 teachers, staff and faculty
  • College and university teachers, staff and faculty
  • Daycare and early childhood learning center teachers
  • Homeschool teachers

Teachers must also be Target Circle members and complete Target’s verification process.

For teachers who need to provide documentation, Target lists examples such as a valid teacher ID or a recent pay stub.

Don’t Confuse the 20% Offer With Target Circle 360

There are two different student benefits currently being promoted by Target.

The first is the 20% off one purchase offer ending Sept. 12.

The second involves discounted Target Circle 360 membership pricing for eligible verified shoppers. Target Circle 360 is the retailer’s paid membership program that includes features such as same-day delivery and other benefits.

You do not need to buy Target Circle 360 simply to join the free Target Circle loyalty program.

For students interested only in claiming the 20% promotion, the important steps are simple: join Target Circle for free, verify your college enrollment and look for the offer in your account before Sept. 12.
