How Amazon’s 5% Prime for Young Adults Cash Back Works Before It Ends Sept. 15

Amazon has expanded one of its Prime for Young Adults perks just as students are finishing back-to-school and move-in shopping.

Through Sept. 15, 2026, Prime for Young Adults members can earn 5% cash back on eligible everyday grocery essentials, home, kitchen and office purchases. Those temporary categories join existing eligible categories such as beauty, apparel, personal care, PCs and electronics.

The benefit is automatic on eligible purchases, but there are several rules worth knowing before assuming everything in your Amazon cart will earn 5%.

Quick Take

  • Limited-time categories: Grocery essentials, home, kitchen and office
  • Cash back rate: 5% on eligible purchases
  • Deadline: Sept. 15, 2026
  • Who qualifies: Prime for Young Adults members
  • Membership eligibility: Higher-education students and adults ages 18 to 24
  • Membership price after eligible trial: $7.49 per month or $69 per year
  • Minimum cash-back balance to redeem: $5
  • Reward expiration: 180 days after earning
  • Annual earning cap: $500

Who Can Get the 5% Cash Back?

This offer is specifically tied to Prime for Young Adults, not every standard Amazon Prime membership.

Amazon says Prime for Young Adults is available to eligible people ages 18 to 24 as well as higher-education students. Eligible new members can receive a six-month $0 trial before the membership changes to $7.49 per month or $69 per year.

Young adults can verify their age using identification such as a driver's license, passport or identity card.

Higher-education students enrolled at a two-year or four-year college can also qualify using a .edu email address, according to Amazon.

That means you do not necessarily need to be a college student to qualify. An eligible 18-to-24-year-old who is not enrolled in college can still use Prime for Young Adults.

What Purchases Earn 5% Through Sept. 15?

Amazon's current promotion expands 5% cash back to several categories commonly used for dorm rooms, apartments and back-to-school shopping.

Through Sept. 15, eligible categories include:

  • Everyday grocery essentials
  • Home products
  • Kitchen products
  • Office products

Amazon gives examples including bedding, storage products, air purifiers, coffee makers, air fryers, water bottles, calculators, printers, notebooks and desk accessories. Grocery examples include snacks, coffee, energy drinks, pasta, cereal, granola bars, sauces and seasonings.

These categories are being added temporarily to Prime for Young Adults' existing cash-back categories, which Amazon says include beauty, apparel, personal care, PCs and electronics.

Not every product sold on Amazon should automatically be assumed to qualify. Check the product or offer details associated with your account before purchasing if the cash back is an important part of your decision.

How Does the Amazon Cash Back Work?

You do not need to manually activate the 5% reward each time you purchase an eligible product.

Amazon says Prime for Young Adults members automatically earn 5% cash back on the final eligible purchase price.

The reward becomes available after the order arrives.

You can then sign in to Amazon and check your cash-back balance through the Prime for Young Adults section of your account.

There is one important limitation: you need at least $5 in accumulated cash back before you can redeem it.

Once redeemed, the reward can be applied toward most qualifying Amazon purchases at checkout.

Is This the Same as 5% Back From an Amazon Credit Card?

No.

The Prime for Young Adults cash-back program is a membership benefit and should not be confused with rewards offered by Amazon-branded credit cards.

Amazon's description of the Young Adults benefit does not require members to open an Amazon credit card to earn the promotional 5% cash back. Instead, eligible rewards are tied to qualifying Prime for Young Adults purchases.

That distinction is useful because Amazon offers several different rewards programs that can display percentages at checkout.

If you have an Amazon credit card, the card's rewards are governed by separate terms.

Are There Limits on How Much Cash Back You Can Earn?

Yes.

Amazon says Prime for Young Adults cash-back earnings are capped at:

  • $100 from a single purchase
  • $500 per year

The reward is based on the final price of the eligible purchase.

For typical dorm, grocery or office-supply purchases, the single-purchase cap may not matter much. It becomes more relevant if you are buying expensive electronics or making a large combined purchase.

Amazon also says cash-back rates and eligible categories can vary throughout the year, so the current selection should not be assumed to remain permanent.

Do Amazon Cash-Back Rewards Expire?

Yes, and this is easy to overlook.

Prime for Young Adults cash-back rewards expire 180 days after they are earned.

You can check the expiration date associated with your cash-back balance through Amazon's Prime for Young Adults page.

Once you have at least $5 available, you can redeem the reward and use it toward most eligible purchases.

Amazon says cash back cannot be used for certain categories, including:

  • Gift cards
  • Digital content
  • Prime membership fees

It also cannot be applied retroactively to a purchase you already completed.

What Happens After Sept. 15?

Sept. 15 is the important deadline for the temporary expansion into grocery essentials, home, kitchen and office products.

It does not mean the entire Prime for Young Adults cash-back program disappears that day.

Amazon says the newly added categories join existing 5% cash-back categories that include beauty, apparel, personal care, PCs and electronics.

Cash-back categories and rates can change, however, so shoppers should check the current Prime for Young Adults page after Sept. 15 rather than assuming a specific product still qualifies.

If you are already planning to buy dorm supplies, apartment essentials, school supplies or pantry items, completing eligible purchases before Sept. 15 gives you the chance to use the expanded category list.

Is Prime for Young Adults Cheaper Than Regular Prime?

Yes.

A standard U.S. Prime membership currently costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year.

Prime for Young Adults costs $7.49 per month or $69 per year after the applicable trial, roughly half the regular membership price.

Amazon says eligible new Prime for Young Adults members can receive a six-month $0 trial.

The membership includes the broader benefits associated with Prime, such as eligible fast delivery and Prime Video, while adding benefits aimed specifically at younger members.

For shoppers who already qualify, the key date for the current cash-back expansion is simple:

Eligible Prime for Young Adults members have through Sept. 15 to earn 5% cash back on qualifying grocery essentials, home, kitchen and office purchases.
