What Time Do iPhone Duo Preorders Start?
Apple says U.S. preorders begin at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, Oct. 16.
For shoppers across the continental United States, that means:
- Pacific Time: 5 a.m.
- Mountain Time: 6 a.m.
- Central Time: 7 a.m.
- Eastern Time: 8 a.m.
The iPhone Duo then becomes officially available Friday, Oct. 23 in the United States and more than 70 other countries and regions.
Apple plans a second wave of availability in additional markets beginning Oct. 30.
How Much Does the iPhone Duo Cost?
The iPhone Duo is easily one of Apple’s most expensive iPhones.
Apple’s current U.S. pricing is:
- 256GB: $1,999
- 512GB: $2,199
- 1TB: $2,599
- 2TB: $3,199
Those prices are before sales tax, AppleCare or accessories.
The jump between storage levels becomes especially large at the top of the range. Moving from 512GB to 1TB adds $400, while the 2TB model costs $1,200 more than the entry-level version.
For many shoppers, choosing the right storage level may therefore matter almost as much as deciding whether to buy the Duo at all.
Why Is the iPhone Duo Releasing Later Than the iPhone 18 Pro?
Apple is using two different launch schedules this year.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max open for preorder Saturday, Sept. 12, with general availability beginning Friday, Sept. 18.
The iPhone Duo does not open for preorder until Oct. 16.
That means someone choosing between the iPhone 18 Pro and Duo has nearly a month between the Pro launch and the Duo preorder date.
Apple has not described the later Duo schedule as a delay. It announced Oct. 16 and Oct. 23 as the official preorder and availability dates from the start.
What Makes the iPhone Duo Different?
The biggest difference is obvious: it folds.
When closed, the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display designed for normal one-handed phone use.
Open it and you get a 7.6-inch folding OLED display, which Apple says is the largest display it has ever put on an iPhone.
Both screens support features including:
- ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz
- Always-On display
- HDR
- True Tone
- Up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness
The larger display can also run two apps side by side using Split View, something Apple specifically designed iOS 27 for on the Duo.
Does the iPhone Duo Have Face ID?
No.
One of the more surprising changes is that the iPhone Duo uses Touch ID built into the side button instead of the familiar Face ID system found on recent flagship iPhones.
Apple says this allows users to unlock the device consistently whether it is open or closed.
The phone also includes an under-display FaceTime camera on the inner screen, which helps keep the larger folding display visually uninterrupted when that camera is not being used.
What Cameras Does It Have?
The iPhone Duo uses a 48-megapixel Dual Fusion camera system.
That includes:
- 48MP Fusion Main camera
- Optical-quality 2x telephoto option
- 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera
- Macro photography support
- Up to 10x digital zoom
Because the phone folds, Apple has also added camera features that use both displays.
For example, the subject of a photo can see a live preview on the outer screen while someone else takes the picture using the main cameras.
How Long Does the Battery Last?
Apple rates the iPhone Duo for up to 24 hours of typical use.
For video playback, Apple lists:
- Up to 44 hours using the outer display
- Up to 31 hours using the inner display
- Up to 37 hours of streamed video using the outer display
- Up to 26 hours using the inner display
The phone uses two internal batteries, one on each side of the folding design.
It also supports fast charging and MagSafe wireless charging.
Is the iPhone Duo Water Resistant?
Yes.
Apple gives the iPhone Duo an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, with testing listed at a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes.
The phone uses a grade 5 titanium frame and a hinge made from more than 100 components.
The outer display uses Ceramic Shield 2, while Apple uses multiple protective layers and a titanium support structure beneath the folding inner display.
As with other phones, water resistance can decrease with normal wear, so the rating should not be treated as permission to intentionally use the device underwater.
Does iPhone Duo Work With Apple Pencil?
Yes, but not immediately.
Apple says Apple Pencil with USB-C support will arrive later in 2026.
The Pencil can be used on either display for activities such as taking notes, marking up documents and sketching.
That feature gives the unfolded Duo more tablet-like functionality than a traditional iPhone.
Are Trade-In Deals Available?
Apple is already advertising trade-in options for its new iPhones.
Customers trading an eligible iPhone 13 or newer can receive between $175 and $885 in Apple Trade In credit toward an iPhone Duo or iPhone 18 Pro, depending on the device and condition.
Apple also lists carrier promotions offering as much as $1,200 in credits under qualifying plans and trade-in terms.
Those deals can involve multi-year carrier bill credits, so shoppers should compare the full requirements rather than looking only at the maximum advertised discount.
Should You Preorder on Oct. 16?
For most shoppers, there is no need to decide immediately.
The Duo is a first-generation Apple product in a completely new iPhone form factor, and its $1,999 starting price is significantly higher than the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Waiting for independent reviews could provide useful information about:
- Hinge durability
- Inner-screen crease visibility
- Real-world battery life
- App compatibility
- Camera performance
- Comfort when folded
- Whether the large screen is actually useful day to day
For buyers who already know they want Apple’s first foldable iPhone, however, the date to remember is straightforward:
